The Britney Spears merry-go-round has been perpetrated by the usual suspects in media–People, Us, Perez Hilton, TMZ–but a strange new phenomenon started when more traditional media jumped in on the fun, like CNN and AP. This is when nearly everyone begun scratching their heads and asking “What just happened here?” Vanity Fair examines this inexplicably obsessive relationship between media and the aging pop star. Now that Britney Spears has receded from the headlines somewhat, it seems an opportune time to step back and assess the recent coverage of her, not only in the weekly tabloids but also in magazines where stories can run longer than 1,000 words, such as Portfolio, Rolling Stone, and The Atlantic, whose April cover she graced (or disgraced, depending on whom you ask). In fact, this recent spate of “serious” coverage, combined with the uncomfortable fact that no dinner conversation can proceed for more than 15 minutes without the name Britney being invoked, raises a sinister question: is Britney Spears—along with, perhaps, President Bush—the most important cultural figure in America?
